Overconfidence

In his short talk at TED@NYC, Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Hogan Vice President of Research and Innovation, examines the relationship between confidence and competence. Most people, according to his researches, are overconfident. He  urges the audience to take a more self-aware approach to confidence, and to embrace the power of negative thinking.

Personal Confidence & Motivation

Do you have the self belief and confidence to make a difference? Do you “just know” that you’ll succeed no matter what? Do you know what motivates and gets you going? And do you know how to tap into the motivations of other people?

In Personal Confidence & Motivation written by Sean McPheat (Founder and Managing Director of management development specialists, MTD Training) you’ll find the answers to all of these questions and much more besides. You’ll understand how to build your own confidence levels and how to generate confidence in an instant. You’ll then move to the topic of motivation and you’ll be able to really understand this area of personal development.

Impostor Syndrome

As strange as it seems, over 70% of people have experienced at one time or other in their lives the feeling to cover a place or a charge behind their personal value and capacity. People are unable to see their own accomplishments, dismissing them as luck, timing, or as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent and competent than they believe themselves to be.

Mike San Román gives eight advises that help you tackle with such an uncomfortable state of mind.

  1. Recognize that the problem exists.
  2. When you receive positive feedback, embrace it with objectivity and internalize it.
  3. Don’t attribute your successes to luck.
  4. Don’t talk about your abilities or successes with words like “merely,” “only,” “simply,” etc.Keep a journal.
  5. Writing your successes and failures down gives you a retrospective insight about them, and re-reading them makes you remember equally both of them.
  6. Recognize that the perfect performer doesn’t exist, and that problems will pop up eventually.
  7. Be proud of being humble.
  8. Remember that it’s okay to seek help from others, and that even the best do it.

Self-confidence

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
